Each day, we draw closer to the American Birkenbeiner! Todd comes to us live from the WBZH studios in Hayward, Wisconsin to get the local scoop. Today, we are lucky to be joined by Civic Media’s Programming Director, Kathryn Lake! She shares her broadcasting journey before bringing us some interviews of Birkie participants. We hear from a local man who’s skied in 30 Birkies, a Swiss family, an eight-year-old boy attending his first race, and an advocate for disabled skiers. Hayward may lack snow, but it more than makes up for it in spirit and camaraderie. Stay tuned for more Birkie coverage over the next few days!

On this day in 1980, Al Michaels delivered one of the most famous lines in sports broadcast history: “Do you believe in miracles? Yes!” Today, we remember the Miracle On Ice, a legendary Olympic men’s hockey game in which the underdog American team beat the Soviet Union. We share the original audio, as well as some reflections from Al Michaels about that fateful day 44 years ago. Listeners also call and text in with their memories of the Miracle On Ice. If you stay tuned until the end, you’ll discover our friend Rico’s recipe for a different kind of Miracle On Ice!
